Speke Resort Munyonyo gears up for Uganda’s G77 South Summit in 2024.

The highly anticipated Group of 77 (G77) 3rd South Summit will be hosted at Speke Resort Munyonyo from January 21 to January 23, 2024, and the prestigious resort is already getting ready for the event.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused the Summit to be postponed in 2020; however, it will now take place the following year with the theme "Leaving no one behind."

Pedroso Cuesta, AM After a four-day fact-finding mission to learn more about Uganda's plans to host the summit on May 18, 2023, Group of 77 Chair Pedro Luis and his colleagues were pleased with the preparations made thus far on the ground.

Amb. Pedroso stated that preparations had been finished, including the building of a cutting-edge conference center at Speke Resort. "We are very pleased because we have seen the magnificent efforts being made here to ensure the event's success, and we are confident it will be a success," he added.

The summit, according to Hon. Henry Okello Oryem, Uganda's State Minister for Foreign Affairs, would benefit the country's economy and social structure. This historic event, he said, "underscores Uganda's commitment to advancing shared economic interests and encouraging South-South cooperation for development."

The South Summit is the principal governing body of the Group of 77. While the Second South Summit was held in Doha, Qatar, the First South Summit was held in Havana, Cuba.

Uganda was chosen to host this summit in accordance with the concept of geographic rotation. The largest intergovernmental organization of developing countries at the UN is the organization of 77, which enables the nations of the South to identify and promote their shared economic interests.

The summit also aims to advance South-South cooperation for development and increase the collective bargaining capacity of the United Nations system on all significant global economic issues.
